Moscow-Bavarian Joint Advanced Student School - MB-JASS'2006

Course 1: Medical Imaging and Computer Simulations

Sunday, March 19 through Wednesday, March 29, 2006

Within the context of the first "Moscow-Bavarian Joint Advanced Student School - MB-JASS'2006" (from Sunday, March 19th 2006 through Wednesday, March 29 2006) we offer the course "Medical Imaging and Computer Simulations". The course is divided into two different parts. The participants from Erlangen and Munich are concerned with "Medical Imaging", whereas the topic "Computer Simulations" is of interest for the participants from Moscow.

Medical Imaging (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Joachim Hornegger)

At this part of the course algorithms of 3D-reconstruction for computed tomography and it's realization are at the centre of interest. The discussion and the implementation of a reconstruction method for a C-arm CT-system (without calibration) are in the center of attention. On the basis of the Cell Broadband Architecture shall take place a parallelization which is also to be evaluated experimentally. Different parts of the project are to be solved in teamwork. Necessary medical data are available.

The following topics are scheduled:

  • Filtered backprojection
  • Computation intensive pre-processing algorithms
Required are a thorough knowledge of the C/C++ programming language as well as a good skill in programming Linux systems. Background knowledge of 3-D CT reconstruction methods are helpful.

Computer Simulations (Prof. Dr. Sergey I. Schookin and Prof. Dr. Konstantin V. Shaitan)

This part of the course deals with the following:
  • Molecular modeling of biomembranes, proteins, peptides and polymers
  • Molecular graphics
  • Free energy calculation in MD simulations

Highly motivated and interested students can apply for this course until 01/22/2006. Travelling expenses, participation and accomodation are paid completely for the participants.
