Researcher in the Digital Sports and Sportronics group at the Chair of Computer Science 5 (Pattern Recognition)
of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg

My vision is the introduction of innovative ideas from Computer Science and Electrical Engineering into digital sports applications.

Digital Sports

Pattern Recognition methods in digital sports applications

Overview

Embedded Systems are capable of delivering interesting and important information to their users in many aspects of daily life. Examples can be found in automobile engineering, industrial automation or biomedical implants. In sports there are systems imaginable as well that support, guide and motivate athletes.

Already there is for example the possibility of acquiring and displaying the pulse frequency and/or the actual speed of a runner. Within the scope of this project, such as well as similar concepts will be explored and improved. For this purpose, the options of integrating different sensors into sportswear will be examined. Furthermore, potential processing of the measured signals will be studied. Pattern Recognition concepts will then be applied to extract any information of interest from the data. As an example it can be thought of reporting the degree of fatigue or assessing the health aspect of certain motion sequences, e.g. running.
