Make CT reconstruction fast!

Hardware Acceleration Techniques for 3D Cone-Beam Reconstruction

An Overview of Parallel Implementations involving Reconfigurable Logic and dedicated Processor Architectures

Project Overview

In the scope of a collaboration between the Institute of Pattern Recognition and Siemens Medical Solutions (Components Division) research in the area of innovative developments of computed tomography (CT) and its implementation on different hardware architectures has been conducted since November 2004. The main interest lies on algorithms of 3D-reconstruction in spiral CT and in C-arm systems including necessary pre- and post-processing steps.

The implementation of these methods on different hardware architectures is the main research area of the project. Reconstruction methods in CT require an immense computing power of the reconstruction system, because of the amount of projection data to be processed and also because of the number and size of the slice images to be computed. In order to achieve the predominant demands for computing time of productive systems, it is still necessary to use scalable hardware components. This project concentrates on parallel implementations of different reconstruction algorithms on multi processor systems, graphics accelerator boards, specialized processors (e.g. the Cell Broadband Engine Architecture), as well as reconfigurable accelerator hardware based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology.

Another important area of research is the investigation of reconstruction methods, that can be employed in future CT systems, with a clear improvement of image quality. Together with iterative methods, exact reconstruction algorithms of the filtered back projection type will be examined.
